From April 19-21 2018, Old/New Borrowed/Blue, is a double-bill of Dominick Argento’s Miss Havisham’s Wedding and Boston-based composer Dan Shore’s The Beautiful Bridegroom.
Miss Havisham’s Wedding is a musical soliloquy on Charles Dickens’ character from Great Expectations. In a room long left untouched, Miss Havisham spends the night reenacting all that happened to her when she was left by her lover on their wedding day fifty years before. This opera is a riveting solo performance that plunges the audience into the mind of Dicken’s iconic character as she relives each past moment, unaware of her own present.
Hailed as “a little masterpiece” by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Del Tredici, The Beautiful Bridegroom is a one-act comic opera for six women. Based on an 18th-centry play by Ludvig Holberg, this Mozart pastiche tells the story of a widow who has been searching for a young husband…not for her two marriageable daughters, but for herself!
